A Raisin in the Sun

A Raisin in the Sun was such a great movie and play. Lorraine Hansberry, author of the play, did such a wonderful job addressing the troubles of gambling your money, the treatment of women, the treatment of elderly, and the discrimination of African Americans in the 1950-60s. The story revolves around the Younger family, who just recently lost the head of the house and are struggling with keeping everything together. It opens with Ruth, the wife of Walter, getting everyone out of bed, making breakfast, and trying to get everyone together for work and school. Yet, her son, Travis, and her husband, pester her all morning and don't listen to her at all. Walter gives Travis money for school, knowing they cannot afford it, but refusing to show his son that they're struggling to make ends meet. Walter insists on his Mama giving him money to let him invest in a liquor store, even though that is one of the worst ideas, ever. Walter also belittles his sister, Beneatha, who is working to get into medical school to become a doctor. He insists that she find a nice husband, with lots of money, so that she can be a proper housewife who provides lots of children. Obviously, Beneatha does NOT take that well, with the aspiring feminist she is (my icon). Now Mama, she is always yelling at those two, she cannot stand when they fight, especially because they were raised to love each other (siblings are always fighting though, so I don't really understand that). Walter is also lowkey a drunk, which YIKES for his family. It doesn't make anything better when Ruth finds out she's pregnant. She basically threatens to get rid of the baby and Walter is all like "she wouldn't ever do that." Then Ruth was like "watch me, hahaha." She didn't actually get rid of the baby, but Walter did fix himself up a tad bit. Mama got her life insurance check from her dead husband, which was $10,000. That's not a lot now but was a LOT back then. So, Mama went and put a deposit on a house for the family, which was in a white neighborhood, and we all know how that went. But thankfully, Walter stood up for his family (literally the only good thing that man did, UGH) and confirmed that they were moving in, regardless of what the neighborhood wanted. Honestly, they're iconic for that! Anyways, thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would 100% watch it again!

Here's a picture of the newer cast of this movie!
